Position @ Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory

The following is from an email.

Potential Candidates:
In May of last year, Andrew Rosenberger sent you an email on our behalf as you may know of current or former students that might be interested in an exciting opportunity in the field of fracture mechanics testing at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) in Niskayuna, New York.
I am the hiring manager for that position and would like to expand on Andrew's email with additional distribution and information for you. KAPL is responsible for the development of nuclear propulsion plants and reactor cores for the Navy's nuclear powered submarines and aircraft carriers and is run by a private company, the Bechtel Marine Propulsion Company (BMPC), on behalf of the Department of Energy.
Residing within KAPL, is the Materials Characterization Laboratory, responsible for providing materials property data and test development expertise to a diverse customer base throughout the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP). Our laboratory specializes in standard and developmental mechanical testing and the work environment encompasses both team and individual contributor settings. This position includes a mixture of fracture toughness, master curve, fatigue crack growth testing and non-standard/prototypic (actual component-type) tests that are coupled directly or indirectly with modeling.
Although the candidate we are seeking would perform a mixture of ASTM standard tests and non-standard tests, we are a research and development facility, not a production laboratory. The candidate would be involved with test programs from conception through analysis of the data. The non-standard, proof-of-principle testing is performed in the same laboratory as the standard testing, but there is no rigid structure to guide the process from the conceptual design phase to completion. These unique tests require creative thinking along with a knowledge of fracture mechanics to develop the test method.
This position presents a unique opportunity for someone interested in furthering their knowledge in the field of fracture mechanics. Employees in our group have participated in ASTM committee meetings, influenced the direction of the standards and have published their work.
Resources available to employees include a variety of servo-hydraulic and electro-mechanical load frames, training, statisticians, modelers, other internal labs that provide services such as dynamic modulus, metallography, SEM analysis, non-destructive inspections, welding and machining. The candidate will use a variety of software and hardware from both load frame vendors and third party vendors. When there is no commercially available data acquisition program available, we have the ability to develop our own custom system using a product that includes both hardware and software. We have service vendors who provide both phone and field service support.
If you, or anyone you know may be interested in this unique opportunity, please contact me, Tymm Schumaker, at: Email: tymm.schumaker@unnpp.gov.

Thank you for your consideration,
Tymm Schumaker
