X-ray Computed Tomography for Additively Manufactured Parts
The Army Research Laboratory (Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD) is seeking an undergraduate Materials Science and Engineering summer student to evaluate additively manufactured (AM) parts with x-ray micro-computed tomography (microCT). Part qualification and process parameter optimization are critical for AM certification before parts can be fielded. MicroCT is a critical technology for measuring the part quality through quantifying defects and part dimensions. Responsibilities will include scanning of 3D printed parts, conducting microstructural analysis including void percentages and part tolerances, and mechanical testing to evaluate the part performance. Previous experience with image processing, mechanical testing, and design of experiments are encouraged. The goal of this project will be to establish relationships between the varied processing conditions with the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties. Interested candidates should send resumes to Dr. Jennifer Sietins (jennifer.m.sietins.civ@mail.mil) by March 1, 2016.
