Several Possitions @ AK Stell


AK Steel, a leading producer of carbon, stainless and electrical steels, has an immediate opening for a Research Engineer for electrical steel products at its Research & Technology Center located in Middletown, Ohio.  
  
 RESEARCH ENGINEER - ELECTRICAL STEELS



This position will involve development work both inside an industrial research laboratory and implementation into practice in plant environments.  The ideal candidate will have proven expertise and a demonstrated innovations track record in the production of electrical steel grades, preferably both oriented and non-oriented electrical steels.  Focus will be placed on lab process and product innovation, but the position also will require technical and operating engineering support to operations, particularly with respect to manufacturing practice development for novel products.  The position also requires technical understanding of key laboratory equipment and processes that support Research activities, and will involve conducting trials using Research Laboratory facilities.  Travel may be required in support of AK Steel’s manufacturing plants.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced metallurgical engineering degree and/or significant equivalent experience.  Post-doctoral experience is considered to be a plus.  The candidate must possess the ability to work independently and problem-solve complex industrial issues.  A sound knowledge of process modeling is expected.  A history of published work is sought to demonstrate ability to document and bring work to a conclusion.  Fundamental computer skills such as Microsoft Office programs need to be complemented by programming skills and database management knowledge.  Effective written and oral communication skills are an integral component of this position.

 Engineer HR/CR – Process Research

AK Steel, a leading producer of carbon, stainless and electrical steels, has an immediate opening for an engineer in the Process Research group at its Research & Technology Center located in Middletown, Ohio.  This position, reporting to the Manager of Process Research, will act in support of hot and cold rolling operations, particularly with respect to development of novel products.  The position requires an understanding of technical, operational, and maintenance aspects of laboratory equipment as well as of industrial processes that are supported by Research activities.  The ideal candidate will have proven expertise and a demonstrated track record of innovation in the production of flat-rolled carbon and/or specialty steel grades.  Focus will be placed on lab-based innovation, but the position also will require technical and operating engineering support, particularly with respect to practice development for novel products.  The position also requires technical understanding of key laboratory equipment and processes that support Research activities, and will involve conducting trials using Research Laboratory facilities.  Travel may be required in support of AK Steel’s manufacturing plants.

Metallurgical Research Engineer

AK Steel, a leading producer of carbon, stainless and electrical steels, has an immediate opening for an Engineer in its Research & Innovation Center located in Middletown, Ohio.

Responsibilities of the engineer would include:
  • Indentifying and pursuing new and innovative product ideas and opportunities
  • Developing new products working with cross functional development teams
  • Performing metallurgical research to support steel product development
  • Organizing and carrying out laboratory and plant-based experiments
  • Qualifying new process routings for existing products
  • Supporting productivity and quality improvement programs
Job requirements:
  • The ideal candidate will have a M.S. or PhD degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in ferritic metals research and/or product development is preferred
  • Will require approximately 25% travel
 
Casting Engineer – Process Research

This position, reporting to the Manager of Process Research, will act in support of primary and secondary steelmaking as well as casting operations for carbon, stainless and electrical steels, particularly with respect to development of novel products.  The position requires an understanding of technical, operational, and maintenance aspects of laboratory equipment as well as of industrial processes that are supported by Research activities.  The ideal candidate will have proven expertise and a demonstrated track record of innovation in the production of flat-rolled steel grades.  Focus will be placed on lab-based innovation, but the position also will require technical and operating engineering support, particularly with respect to practice development for novel products.  The position also requires technical understanding of key laboratory equipment and processes that support Research activities, and will involve conducting trials using Research Laboratory facilities.  Travel may be required in support of AK Steel’s manufacturing plants.

Metallurgical Research Engineering Manager 

This position will provide leadership in developing enabling technologies and provide product development resources to AK Steel’s product development effort. In addition, the position will serve as a primary communication link among Research/Applications Engineer/Operations/Plant Quality Control on issues impacting future technology and metallurgical development.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Assuring AK Steel safety policies and procedures are communicated, implemented and enforced effectively
  • Managing the Metallurgical Research Engineers to support innovative product technology development
  • Promoting an innovative research culture, targeting the identification and pursuit of new and innovative product and process technologies
  • Managing personnel, budgets and associated resources, including goal setting, project approval, schedule development and deliverables
  • Assuring coordination with the Research Product Development group and other functions to make sure product
Job Requirements:
  • The ideal candidate will have a M.S. or PhD degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science
  • At least 10 years of related research experience and some management experience is required

Manager- Process Research

This position, reporting to the Corporate Manager of Research & Innovation, involves guiding engineers and service providers in technology development on innovative carbon and stainless steels, both in an industrial research laboratory and in the practical implementation in plant environments.  The ideal candidate will have proven expertise and demonstrated innovations in the production of various flat-rolled steel grades, ranging from steelmaking through hot rolling, cold rolling, pickling and heat treating.  Focus will be placed on lab-based innovation, but the position also will require technical and operating engineering support to operations, particularly with respect to practice development for novel products.  The position also requires technical understanding of key laboratory equipment and processes that support Research activities, and will involve conducting trials using Research Laboratory facilities.  Travel may be required in support of AK Steel’s manufacturing plants.
