Co-op – Materials Science and Engineering


Purpose: The Materials Science and Engineering Co-op’s primary responsibility will be to provide project support as directed by Metallurgical Engineering Staff on projects including failure analysis, new product evaluations, product testing and investigations in the field. The Co-op will be responsible, with training, for maintaining and operating laboratory equipment and shop machinery. An objective for the Co-op position will be to process at least one project from assessment, analysis to final report and recommendation.
 

Duties Require Working with Metallurgical Engineering Staff to:
  • Process projects through complete failure analysis cycle including: document incoming material, develop failure analysis plan, prepare samples for various tests/evaluations (chemical, mechanical, metallographic), analyze data and write summary report.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment including: spectrograph, scanning electron microscope, hardness testers (Brinell, Vickers, Rockwell), optical microscopes, metallographic mounting press, MTS Cycle Testing equipment, Charpy impact tester.
  • Operate and maintain shop equipment including: band saw, abrasive cut-off saw, grinder.
  • Operate and maintain metallurgical laboratory equipment and supplies: mounting press, polishing/grinding stations, chemicals and etchants.
  • Provide organized, documented, traceable laboratory work with a subsequent written report that is, also, well-documented, factual, concise and presented in a logical format.
  • Respond to customer needs in a timely manner and meet departmental deadlines on project work.
  • Must be willing to travel as required.
Education and Preferred Courses: Last semester Junior level student with an expected graduation date of May 2016 working towards a BS Materials Science and Engineering with a special interest in Metallurgy and Failure Analysis. 

Recommend completion of courses in the following subject areas: Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Failure Analysis, Physical Metallurgy.
